Acid-base Balance in Callinectes Sapidus during Acclimation from High to Low Salinity

چکیده
When transferred from 865 to 250 m-osmol salinity, the blue crab C. sapidus maintains its blood Na+ and Cl~ concentrations significantly above those in the medium. When branchial carbonic anhydrase is inhibited by acetazolamide, ion regulation fails and the animals do not survive the transfer. An alkalosis occurs in the blood at low salinity, indicated by an increase in HCO3~ and pH at constant PCO|The alkalosis is closely correlated with an increase in the Na+-Cl~ difference, a convenient indicator of the overall strong ion difference. The contribution^ of changes in PCOl to acid-base changes was negligible, but the change in the total weak acid (proteins) may be important. It is suggested that the change in blood acidbase status with salinity is related to an increase in the strong ion difference, which changes during the transition from osmoconformity to osmoregulation in the blue crab, and which is related to both carbonic anhydrase and ionactivated ATPases.

Mechanism of the Net Uptake of Water in Moulting Blue Crabs (callinectes Sapidus) Acclimated to High and Low Salinities
Blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus Rathbun) acclimated to a salinity of 2 approximately doubled in wet mass (excluding carapace) during the period from 10 h before moult to 2 h after moult. Both in blue crabs acclimated to 2 salinity and in crabs acclimated to 28 salinity, the drinking rate increased from approximately 0.4 ml 100 g-1 h-1 at 1 day prior to moult to approximately 8 ml 100 g-1 h-1 du...
متن کاملThe effects of rapid salinity change on in vivo arginine kinase flux in the juvenile blue crab, Callinectes sapidus.
The effect of acclimation salinity and salinity changes on the concentration of high-energy phosphate metabolites and arginine kinase (AK) flux was examined in vivo in juvenile blue crabs using 31P-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Crabs were acclimated for 7 days to a salinity of 5 or 35 per thousand and then placed in a flow apparatus that could sustain the animals while NMR spectra were acqu...
متن کاملOsmotic effects on arginine kinase function in living muscle of the blue crab Callinectes sapidus.
Flux was examined through the reaction catalyzed by arginine kinase in intact blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) muscle during simulated changes in salinity. Isolated dark levator muscles from the swimming leg were superfused with a saline solution that had an osmolarity equivalent to that of the hemolymph under different salinity regimes. Animals were acclimated for 7 days to a salinity of 5, 17 ...
متن کاملThe Role of Carbonic Anhydrase in Respiration, Ion Regulation and Acid-base Balance in the Aquatic Crab Calunectes Sapidus and the Terrestrial Crab Gecarcinus Lateraus
The enzyme carbonic anhydrase (CA), which is concentrated mainly in the osmoregulatory tissue of the gills, appears to be required for ion regulation but not for CO2 excretion. An injection of the CA inhibitor acetazolamide produced an inhibition of between 90 and 100 %, which took 6 h to be fully effective, and 48-96 h to wear off. During trie period of inhibition in Callinectes sapidus there ...
